ARADO AR 196 (Hidroavión de reconocimento) - NAXOS|PECIO HISTÓRICO
HISTÓRIA. El 17 de septiembre de 1943, la aeronave de observación del tipo Arado 196, se embarcó en una misión para proteger a un convoy que constaba de tres barcos (El UJ 2104, Paula y Plutón) en su camino desde El Pireo a Rodos. Cerca de Naxos, los Beaufighters británicos atacaron el convoy resultando el Arado averiado, teniendo que realizar un amaraje controlado en el mar.
La tripulación fue rescatada por el UJ 2104, pero el avión se hundió poco después. El convoy continuó hacia Rodos, pero en el norte de Astypalaia, fueron atacados nuevamente, esta vez por destructores aliados. Los dos cargueros se hundieron y el UJ 2104 resultó dañado.
Aproximadamente 60 supervivientes, incluida la tripulación del Arado, lograron llegar a Astypalaia, que estaba bajo control italiano ene se momento. Los supervivientes del convoy fueron transferidos a los británicos poco después y permanecieron prisioneros de guerra hasta 1948.
LA INMERSIÓN. Los pescadores griegos encontraron los restos del naufragio en 1982 a 91 metros de profundidad y se trasladaron a la isla de Herakleia.El pecio yace en al actualidad a tan solo -11m en el fondo.

ARADO AR 196 ( Reconnaissance seaplane)- NAXOS|HISTORIC WRECK
HISTORY. On September 17, 1943, this specific Arado 196 went on a mission to protect a convoy consisting of three ships (UJ 2104, Paula, and Pluto) on their way from Piraeus to Rodos Near Naxos, British Beaufighters attacked the convoy, and the Arado was damaged and had to perform a controlled ditching at sea.
The crew was saved by UJ 2104, but the aircraft sunk shortly afterward. (See the picture below, shot minutes before the Arado’s sinking).The crew was reported as “rescued”.
The convoy continued on its way to Rodos, but north of Astypalaia, they were attacked again, this time by allied destroyers. The two cargo ships sunk, and UJ 2104 was badly damaged. Approximately 60 survivors, including the crew of the Arado, managed to reach Astypalaia, which was under Italian control. The survivors of the convoy were transferred to the British shortly after and remained POW until 1948.

THE DIVE. The wreck was found by Greek fishermen in 1982 at a depth of 91m and was moved in a bay of the island Herakleia. lying at -11m on the bottom.
