La historia. El Messerschmitt Me 323 de seis motores fue el avión de carga más grande utilizado en la Segunda Guerra Mundial. El 26 de julio de 1943, dos ME-363 de 3. Staffel del grupo de transporte I./TG 5 partieron del aeropuerto de Olbia-Venafiorita en Sadegna para unirse a Pistoia en Italia. El avión fue interceptado y derribado por un grupo de Bristol Beaufighter poco tiempo después. Los dos Gigantes intentaron desesperadamente escapar del asalto, pero su bajo armamento y mala maniobrabilidad les dio pocas posibilidades contra los ocho Beaufighters bimotores del 144 Escuadrón Aéreo mientras estaban en una patrulla. Uno de los Beaufighters fue derribado por el fuego de respuesta. El primer ME-363 intentó un aterrizaje forzoso en La Maddalena y se estrelló en una zona llamada Mongiardino. El segundo intentó un aterrizaje de emergencia lo más cerca posible de la costa, hundiéndose suavemente en el este de las islas.

Six-engined Messerschmitt Me 323 Gigant was the biggest cargo plane used in WW2. On July 26th, 1943, two ME-363 from 3. Staffel from I./TG 5 transport group left from Olbia-Venafiorita airport in Sadegna to join Pistoia in Italy. The plane was reported intercepted and shot down by a group of Bristol Beaufighter a few times after. The two Giants desperately attempted to escape the assault, but their low armament and poor maneuverability gave them little chance against the eight twin-engined Beaufighters from 144 Air Squadron. Eight Beaufighters made the interception whilst on a ‘Rover’ patrol. One of the Beaufighters was brought down by return fire. The first ME-363 attempted a forced landing on La Maddalena and crashed in an area named Mongiardino. The second attempting an emergency landing as close as possible to the shore, sunk softly in the east of the islands.
The wreck rest at -65m underwater in very good conditions.
