SCAPA FLOW DIVING PROGRAM

SCAPA FLOW ANCHORAGE

Orkney Islands

INFORMATION

" Skalpaflói " is a name that comes from Old Norwegian and means " The bay of the long isthmus." This 240 square mile body of water that connects the North Sea with the Atlantic, located north of Scotland in the Orkney, is the Scapa Flow anchorage.

It is a special place, only suitable for experienced divers who can disassociate in a few seconds, goldfish, corals, light, heat, and infinite visibility, with a good dive,

In the anchorage of Scapa flow, apart from a gray sky, rain, cold, wind, greenish watercolor, the temperature of 11ºC, and little visibility, there are no goldfish or anything like that.

So what kind of diver would want to come to a place like this? Well, probably, the same person who reads this article to the end. Must be an experienced diver, anxious to explore who, even knowing his abilities and expertise, will feel those tickles seconds before the jump on the cold water of the Scapa Flow.

What could be here to make it worth waiting six months or a year for a place in one of the charters that sail on the flow? Simply a trip back in time. Scapa Flow is the key that opens the doors of the largest cemetery for warships in Europe, where the rests, the German imperial fleet sunk in 1919.

In six diving days, we will explore twelve ships with their history and tragedy at a depth between 25 and 40m. Dimensions, characteristics, and mystery of each shipwreck will overwhelm us, subdue us, and we will surrender to its power. There is nothing shameful about that a 100-year of Scapa Flow history lesson takes time to assimilate.

Some of the wrecks that rest at the bottom bay are considered war graves by the British government and cannot be visited. These shipwrecks are monuments to the victims of the senselessness of war, and like so many other holy places, they deserve all our respect. These silent witnesses of history will accompany us for the rest of our lives as divers. Welcome to Scapa flow.
