U-BOAT 1227

YOU BOAT 1227

THE SHIP. U Boat - 1277 was a German Kriegsmarine Type VIIC / 41 submarine. It was built at the Bremer Vulkan-Vegesacker Werft shipyard, Bremen-Vegesack and launched on May 3, 1944, but was commissioned only in August when it was placed in 8 flotillas in Danzig as a training submarine. In February she was transferred to Flotilla 11 in Bergen and sailed in April.

HISTORY. Portugal, June 3, 1945. It is almost a month since the Second World War ended. However, U-1277 continues to navigate ignoring the surrender order that Dönitz issued on May 4, 1945. Its Commander, Ehrenreich-Peter Stever, does not want to surrender to the Allies, because he fears that they will end up being prisoners of the Russians. At first he wanted to surrender to the Spanish, but confusing information about a communist uprising in Spain (which were false), caused him to decide to sink the U-boat, flooding it, in front of O Porto (Portugal) and surrender himself and his crew. to the Portuguese. This was the end of the last U-boat in all of Europe, later U-530 (July 10) and U-977 (August 17) would surrender in Argentina. On June 3, 1945, its crew sank it to prevent the Allies from capturing the submarine. The crew disembarked in boats at Angeiras Beach, Porto, and those who remained on board to maneuver U-1277 were later picked up by Carvalho Araújo and sailed towards Leixões. The Portuguese authorities handed over the crew to a British warship in Lisbon.

THE IMMERSION. This dive site is recommended for experienced divers. There are some ghost nets that can endanger divers. You can still see on the tower the pressure hull, which consists of welded metal plates approximately 22mm thick, the combat periscope with the shiny stainless steel, and the deckless hatch.

Despite its deteriorated state, the U-1277 submarine remains one of the main wrecks for recreational diving in Portugal and the best in the north of the country, being considered by some to be the most emblematic dive in Portuguese waters.

The wreckage of the ship U -1277 is located in a northwesterly direction from Porto, 2 miles from the coast, at a depth of -31m.
